The Essex seaside resort that’s ‘completely empty’ off season in winter – Essex Live

Clacton on Sea is completely different from its often crowded self when it goes into winter. According to MyLondon reporter Lea, the only thing she heard towards the promenade's chip shop is the sea violently pounding the coast as opposed to the crowds of sunbathers, seagulls stealing chips, and children begging for ice cream.

Clacton is an option for many people who want to trade the everyday hustle and bustle for the beach. It has a pier, a tonne of fish and chip shops, and all the arcades that can entertain visitors to their heart's content.

However, a typically booming tourism sector has once again come to a standstill in November. Candy Corner, a candy store fortunate enough to occupy the prime space at the pier's entrance, has not done a lot of business lately.

"Some days are worse than others," its dejected employee says. "On a rainy day like today, Ive had 13 customers. On a good summer day, I get more than 100."

Things were grimmer across the road at Ice Cream and Chips at the Pavilion as Lea went to check out the venue opposite the Candy Corner. "We do get a lot less people," the server admitted with a forlorn shrug.

"Today Ive had two, and Ive been open since 10 am. So yeah, a lot less." As the server gently sank back down onto her chair, Lea wished she hadn't eaten lunch just so she could buy something.

The server's disappointment followed Lea as she strolled along the beach. The whole town was riddled with a certain portentous silence that sat like a blanket upon her shoulders as she attempted to find another open shop.

Lea had little luck, and was soon approached by an equally bewildered tourist. While she was looking for answers on Clacton's dormant period, he was simply looking for some food.

"I fancied going to the seaside and one of the closest to me is Clacton," he said. "Ive been during the season and it was full of people and everything was open. I was expecting at least something to be open.

"But when I got here I realised everything is closed. Theres not much to do and its actually very sad how sad it looks in the off-season. There were no other tourists, the beach was empty, and there were only two shops open. I couldnt even get fish and chips.

"The upside of visiting Clacton in the off-season is the gorgeous beaches are empty and if youre driving there are no parking problems. For someone who just wants to enjoy the sea, its the perfect time to visit.

"But if youre visiting with kids or family, I wouldnt recommend it - it looks dodgy and everything is closed." Lea said his judgment of Clacton as 'dodgy' is perhaps unfair, but not unfounded.

Neighbouring Jaywick has often been named England's most deprived area and Lea thinks its off-season feel might partly explain why the area gets a bad rep. According to Lea, while Clacton-on-Sea is the place to be in summer, closed shops, shuttered restaurants and bars, and empty beaches make up the town's winter tapestry, and an overarching feeling of waiting for better days lingers.

Getting started with the GraphQL API – The Daily Swig

ENTERPRISE

You can use the GraphQL API to integrate Burp Suite Enterprise Edition with your own software or a third-party tool. This page explains some points you should be aware of as you get started with the GraphQL API.

To use the GraphQL API you must create a dedicated API user in Burp Suite Enterprise Edition. For instructions on how to create an API user, see Creating API users.

You can only use the API to perform actions that your user has permission for. For instructions on how to appropriately configure the permissions for the user, see Role-based access control.

All operations are performed by sending POST requests to your-web-server-url/graphq1/v1. You do not need to use different endpoints for different query or mutation types as you would in a REST API.

To authorize your request, enter an Authorization header with your API key as its value.

This example shows a GetSiteTree request in cURL format.

We recommend that you use Insomnia to build and test GraphQL calls. Insomnia integrates with our GraphQL schema documentation and allows you to easily convert your GraphQL request to other formats.

To access our GraphQL schema documentation in Insomnia, click the schema button under the GraphQL Query tab. This brings up a searchable menu of Burp Suite Enterprise Edition queries and mutations.

To use Insomnia to convert your GraphQL request to other formats, right-click the request and select Generate Code.

‘NZ has put women’s rugby on the map’ – Black Ferns thank fans – 1News

The Black Ferns have thanked fans for their overwhelming support during this year's triumphant Rugby World Cup campaign on home soil at a function in downtown Auckland this afternoon.

The world champions, some wearing shades after celebrating last night's 34-31 win over England in the final at a packed Eden Park, came out to the roar of dedicated fans from New Zealand and abroad who wanted to congratulate the side again for their historic sixth title.

Co-captain Kennedy Simon led the festivities, thanking fans again for their energy.

"Your support was incredible for us this campaign," Simon said.

"It's been an incredible eight weeks but it was made all the better by you."

Simon also spoke of the legacy of the black jersey and paid tribute to all those who had warn it before them.

"We wouldn't be here without the women who have paved the way for us," she said.

"I think it's safe to say that New Zealand has put women's rugby on the map."

Departing coach Wayne Smith was up next, showing the fun side he had developed in his short stint with the team with a "moondance" before giving a more serious farewell and thanks to all those involved in he campaign.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team," Smith said.

"It's been six or seven months but I've got to know them - they've taught me how to dance, how to sing, how to cry, how to laugh on match day.

"They've changed my life and while I'm finishing up, I'm going to be following them for the rest of their careers."

Smith then turned his attention to the crowd to thank them as well for getting on board with his charge to the World Cup.

"They said we couldn't do it. They said we couldn't fill a stadium. They said that we couldn't get crowds like this.

"But all we set about doing was trying to be true to your DNA, our Kiwi DNA and have the ability to reinvent ourselves and be encouraged to have a crack at stuff."

The final speech was given to retiring great Kendra Cocksedge who stood with fellow retiring Black Fern Renee Wickliffe.

"We can't thank New Zealand enough for getting behind this team, we just love that everyone has fallen in love with the Black Ferns," the halfback said.

"For us to end our careers winning a World Cup on home turf, there's no better way we could have done it.

"We love this team. Keep supporting them."

With the speeches out the way, the team slowly made their way down from the stage to mingle with fans and sign gear, continuing the party that started on the final hooter last night.

Tips that you should follow to take to make your website run smoothly – AppleMagazine

You should always keep your website running smoothly by following a few simple tips. You should regularly update your websites content, optimize your images, check your website for broken links, and more. By following these simple tips, youll keep your website running like a well-oiled machine!

Make sure you are optimizing all of your images to reduce strain on your website because this will make it run faster and more smoothly. You can do this by either using an image compression tool like TinyPNG, or you can change the actual settings within Photoshop (or whichever program youre using) to reduce the file size of each image. You should always have the most optimal web hosting environment for your site so everything runs smoothly. For example, if you are using a shared server, try upgrading to a dedicated server or virtual private server so you have more control over things like memory usage. You can also optimize your hosting with tools like WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache to reduce the load on your servers and automatically speed up your site!

Always be sure to update your websites content regularly. Your audience will come back to the same information if they visit multiple times, so always try to have new material up. This can help increase traffic and sales for your business because it shows that you are current and active! Keeping a blog or creating a social media account is a great way to increase your websites content.

Tips for updating content include setting up a blog with a helpful and educational tone. This is the best way to increase traffic and give your business a professional appearance! And, if youre not sure what to blog about, think about and write down everything that goes on in your business. Then narrow it down to three or four topics that come up most often, and youll always have material to blog about!

Every link on your pages must work correctly to keep everything running smoothly! You should always check for broken links before publishing a new page or blog post so any mistakes are fixed right away instead of having visitors click something only to be taken off-site to an error page. Many tools can help you find any broken links on your website. Make sure you are testing your website on different browsers and devices, so you can always make sure it looks right across all browsers! You should test your site to see how it looks on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, Windows IE, Mac Firefox, etc. so there arent any issues when people go to visit your site on their desktop or mobile device!

Make sure that your website is secure by adding security plugins like WordFence or Sucuri SiteCheck to keep intruders away and malware off your site. Because WordPress includes the ability for anyone to upload code, this makes it more vulnerable to online threats, so be sure to stay protected with these security features! Back-ups are critical because they save all of the work that youve done since you created the site in case anything happens! You never want to lose any data if something goes wrong either internally (i.e., human error) or externally (i.e., hacking), so always be sure to back up your website regularly.

Some threats come from outside forces, but some threats come from inside the company. A new method of cyber-attack is called ransomware, where attackers encrypt all data and hold it for ransom. However, you can protect yourself by following good security practices. Your web host should implement a firewall and malware scanning, run regular security updates to your server, and protect against spam email.

While this may not be necessary, knowing how to code in HTML is an incredibly useful skill that will make creating new pages on your website much faster and easier! If youre already familiar with HTML, then its time to brush up by learning some of the latest features like microdata or figure out how to use the HTML5 Audio element. HTML will also help you create more optimized pages and increase the speed of your website, as well as make sure your site is search engine friendly! To start with HTML you need to understand the important structural tags like the div tag and how it is used for formatting. After you get a better understanding of how HTML works, you can start to play with custom CSS!

There are many different ways that you can keep your website running smoothly, but these five tips will help give you a good start! Follow them and become an expert in no time!

Foodstuff: The ‘gloo that holds it all together – The Aspen Times

I cannot say for certain whether the people of Aspen live in a bubble, given that I am one of such people and Im not sure if anyone would know they were in a bubble from the inside. (See The Truman Show.)

But people in Aspen are definitely eating in bubbles, if the plastic private dining igloos popping up all around town this season are any indication.

Some bubbles came about as a matter of necessity last winter, when indoor dining skeetered between no soup for you and people can have a little table inside, as a treat and restaurants had to get creative to ensure diners could eat outside (er, inside-outside) without freezing their phalanges off.

Even after indoor dining resumed and stayed in play as pandemic restrictions eased, the igloos have stuck around for another season. A few new ones even cropped up, along with a couple of yurts (the igloos private indoor-outdoor dining cousin).

Last year, that was kind of the whole reason why we did the igloos in the first place was to maximize that patio space during COVID and more of the restrictions, and we still have tables now that will show up and they are cautious about COVID, and they want their own family in their own little bubble, said Rachel Koppelman, the chef at Platos Restaurant at Aspen Meadows, where there are three igloos on-site.

But the ethos this year seems to be driven not only by pandemic pressures but also by that Bonus Jonas of the Aspen Idea: mind, body, spirit and experience usually of a private, customizable and high-end variety.

Such is the case for the Diamond Dome on the rooftop courtyard of the conference center The Gant, erected in honor of the 75th anniversary of Aspen Snowmass with a marketing claim to Aspens only rooftop bubble experience.

The first group that booked the dome was sold on the private and small-group setting for a New Years Eve fireworks watch party, said Lou Eppelsheimer, the director of sales and marketing at The Gant; others have come to the dome who might be a little apprehensive to go out in town and eat in a crowded restaurant but are willing to entertain the idea of a smaller, more intimate space.

The Diamond Dome has its own dedicated server and two daily seatings at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Reservations are required 72 hours in advance the dome fits six to eight people comfortably but might hold 10, Eppelsheimer said. Theres a minimum food and beverage spend of $250 that turns into a cancellation fee if diners bail within 24 hours of their reservation.

Over at Duemani, the experience is as exclusive as it is unique, according to Carlos Solorzano-Smith, who oversees day-to-day operations at Duemani and sister restaurant Aquolina as a managing partner of Aspen Hospitality Group. There are two seatings, one at 5:30 p.m. with a $2,000 minimum spend and one around 8 p.m. with a minimum spend of $3,000.

Solorzano-Smith emphasizes service as well as cultivating a beautiful place and warm, fun atmosphere at the yurt, Solorzano-Smith said. The yurt an hold a maximum of 10 diners and also promises a dedicated server. (Most of these dining experiences around town do come with igloo- or yurt-dedicated waitstaff.)

Most of the yurts and igloos around these parts tend to run in that range a few hundred bucks and a few grand for minimum food and beverage spends: its $400 at both the 5:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. seatings for each the three igloos at Platos, which can fit six adults comfortably or eight cozily. ts $2,500 for the 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. seatings at The Snow Lodges yurt at the St. Regis, which can hold as many as 12 diners but has a recommended capacity of 10.

There seems to be an appetite for such private luxury experiences too, according to folks like Koppelman, Eppelsheimer and Solorzano-Smith who oversee the restaurants that offer these sorts of things.

But those of us with appetites but perhaps not the same cash-flow to sate them can still take refuge in one of these plastic domes without liquidating our assets.

Bonnies, that pancake haven on Aspen Mountain, has several eight-person igloos that are first-come, first-serve with no booking fee Monday through Thursday; the booking fee is $50 Friday through Sunday. Reservations are only available in person, so you might actually need those skis you were going to post on the Swap to get there.

Kaya Williams is a reporter for The Aspen Times and The Snowmass Sun whos still waiting to see which local restaurant will have the gumption to offer dining in an actual igloo made of snow. Email her at kwilliams@aspentimes.com.

Armory Square pub hits all the right spots (Family Dining Out Review) – syracuse.com

(As the mom of two preschoolers, eating out as a family can be a challenge to say the least. Between the highchairs, kids menus and sippy cups, dining at restaurants sure looks different than it did a few years ago. But as a foodie, Im determined to not let these houligans ... I mean, the loves of my life ... keep me from enjoying one of my favorite hobbies. Join me on my quest to find great family-friendly restaurants in CNY, where you dont have to choose between a delicious meal or getting the side-eye.)

Syracuse, N.Y. Downtown isnt the first place that comes to mind when youre eating out with kids, but with a dedicated play area, reasonable prices and a menu that would satisfy even the pickiest of eaters, The Hops Spot Burger Bar & Poutinerie (THS) is on its way to changing that.

We ventured to the Armory Square restaurant with kiddos and grandparents in tow to fill our bellies after an afternoon of sledding. Grateful for street parking nearby, our party of seven was quickly escorted past a full bar of SU fans to a large table toward the back of the large, open restaurant.

We were still wrangling our 2-year-old in his high chair when our wonderfully patient and attentive server Charlie stopped by to see if we wanted anything to accompany our waters. The boys quickly indicated their preference for chocolate milk, but it was going to take the rest of us a little longer to browse through the huge selection of craft beers (38 taps), wine and cocktails ($7-$9.79). Draft beer is offered in three sizes (5, 10 & 16 ounces) making it easy to try a bunch, but dont pass on their signature mixed drinks.

I asked for something sweet, and as promised The Dirty Shirley (Black Cherry liqueur, vodka, and Sprite) went down easy reminding me of a cherry cola.

The grilled cheese and fries from the kids menu at The Hops Spot in Syracuse. (Katie Jerome | Contributing Writer)

We placed the kids orders first (chicken tenders and grilled cheese) and were pleasantly surprised at the prices ($5.29-$6.79) as well as the side options: goldfish and carrot sticks in addition to the standard French fries and applesauce. The dedicated kids menu came with crayons and puzzles that held their attention for the five minutes before our 4-year-old spotted the play area. The plastic cups with lids and straws ensured there werent any spills.

With the kids distracted, we finally got a moment to take a closer look at the extensive menu. For a place known for its burgers and fries, we werent expecting the breadth of starters offered from pierogis to tacos. We ultimately decided to share the Fried Green Tomato Stack ($13.29).

THS adds a Southern twist to this caprese-style salad by layering fried green tomatoes with slices of fresh mozzarella, pesto and balsamic glaze. It tasted as delicious as it was presented. We only wished there was more of the sweet balsamic reduction which served as a balance to the tart tomatoes.

THS calls itself a Poutinerie and for good reason. Their fresh hand-cut fries and Yanceys famous cheese curds serve as the perfect base for the restaurants 10 poutine varieties.

Its not a coincidence that THS original location is in Clayton, N.Y., just across the border from the French-Canadian region this famous comfort food hails from. We took Charlies recommendation and tried The Dirty Plate ($14.29) which features a generous topping of chicken tenders, cheddar cheese curds, jalapeos, dill pickles and chipotle ranch. The dish was perfect to share and so tasty that we had to remind ourselves more than once to save room for the entrees.

The kids meals came out with our appetizers as requested, but pulling the boys back to the table proved difficult. I dont know why more restaurants dont offer something similar, but the small area dedicated to little ones is genius.

Its nothing crazya TV with kids Netflix, a height-appropriate chalkboard, and a climber/slidebut its more than enough to keep kids occupied (with something other than a device) while grown-ups enjoy a nice meal. The half-wall and bench seating make it easy for parents to keep an eye on things but also easy for our youngest to make a break and run around the restaurant on occasion. Thankfully our table was nearby and we could intercept him.

I tried a few bites of each and noted they were larger portions and of higher quality than youd find at most kid-friendly restaurants, a clear reflection of the ingredients like thick sourdough bread. My kids had no complaints when they finally ate upon returning home and realizing they were starving.

The rest of us on the other hand, left more than full (as reflected by our to-go boxes). My dad enjoyed the Honey Dijon Chicken salad ($15.29) which was generously topped with fresh ingredients and tossed in a tasty house-made vinaigrette.

The Honey Dijon Chicken Salad from The Hops Spot in Syracuse. (Katie Jerome | Contributing Writer)

Moist chicken was noted on both the salad and the Pickle Rick! ($16.79) that my brother tired, one of six sandwiches featuring THS buttermilk-battered fried chicken. This one had Szechuan sauce, dill pickles, cilantro aioli and a fried pickle speared on top of the bun.

The real stars though were the burgers. It was tempting to Build Your Own veggie, turkey, or grass-fed beef burger with their wide range of toppings and scratch-made sauces, but we decided to trust the kitchen and the remaining three of us ordered house burgers (16 concoctions ranging from $14.79-$16.79) which were huge and included your choice of house fries or side salad (or upgrade to poutine for $4.29).

Both of the beef burgers were perfectly cooked to order (medium rare). I could not have been more pleased with The BB King ($16.49)the combination of the smoked crumbled blue cheese and balsamic bacon jam melted in my mouth. My husband gave high marks to The Corporate ($16.29) which is THS take on a rodeo/western style burger with thick bacon, BBQ sauce and beer-battered onion rings.

The BB King Burger and Dirty Shirley cocktail at The Hops Spot in Syracuse. (Katie Jerome | Contributing Writer)

My mom loved her Harvest Turkey burger ($13.79), which can sometimes be dry but not in this case. The combination of granny smith apples, bacon, cranberry aioli and maple syrup was the perfect bit of fall in every bite.

None of us could finish our meals, but like your last stop at the State Fair, dessert smelled too good to pass up. We ordered the Bourbon Caramel Dessert Poutine for all of us to share. Instead of potatoes, these were cinnamon sugared funnel cake fries served a la mode with decadent house made bourbon caramel. Despite vowing only to have a few bites, we somehow all managed to find enough room in our bellies to clean the whole tray. Next time Ill save room!

The Bourbon Caramel Dessert Poutine at The Hops Spot in Syracuse. (Katie Jerome | Contributing Writer)

If there was any complaint, we felt the buns were a little dry and not up to the same quality as the rest of the ingredients. Upon revisiting the menu for this story, it occurred to me that none of our sandwiches came on the Kaiser brioche listed (and pictured in many reviews online). I called the restaurant to inquire, and sure enough they were out of their usual buns on Saturday and served us the gluten-free rolls instead. Our meals were still delicious, but I wish we had been made aware of the substitution (I may have opted for the pretzel roll instead).

It would take more than dry buns to sour our experience though. From start to finish The Hops Spot executed a superb experience for this multigenerational meal.

If you actually want to enjoy your childrens company, this might not be the placethe play area proved too attractive for our little ones to spend much time at the table. But we were more than happy to have adult conversation without paying a babysitter.

Linux servers and workstations are hackers’ next target, security researchers warn – TechRepublic

Sophisticated hackers and crooks are developing more tools to target Linux-based systems used by government and big business.

At a time when use of open-source platforms are on the rise, researchers at Kaspersky have warned that sophisticated hackers and crooks are increasingly targeting Linux-based devices - using tools specifically designed to exploit vulnerabilities in the platform.

While Windows tends to be more frequently targeted in mass malware attacks, this is not always the case when it comes to advanced persistent threats (APTs), in which an intruder often a nation-state or state-sponsored group - establishes a long-term presence on a network.

According to Kaspersky, these attackers are increasingly diversifying their arsenals to contain Linux tools, giving them a broader reach over the systems they can target. Many organisations choose Linux for strategically important servers and systems, and with a "significant trend" towards using Linux as a desktop environment by big business as well as government bodies, attackers are in turn developing more malware for the platform.

"The trend of enhancing APT toolsets was identified by our experts many times in the past, and Linux-focused tools are no exception," said Yury Namestnikov, head of Kaspersky's global research and analysis team in Russia.

"Aiming to secure their systems, IT and security departments are using Linux more often than before. Threat actors are responding to this with the creation of sophisticated tools that are able to penetrate such systems."

According to Kaspersky, over a dozen APT actors have been observed to use Linux malware or some Linux-based modules.

Most recently, this has included the LightSpy and WellMess malware campaigns, both of which targeted both Windows and Linux devices. The LightSpy malware was also found to be capable of targeting iOS and Mac devices.

While targeted attacks on Linux-based systems are still uncommon, a suite of webshells, backdoors, rootkits and custom-made exploits are readily available to those that seek to use them.

Kaspersky also suggested that the small number of recorded attacks was not representative of the danger they posed, pointing out that the compromise of a single Linux server "often leads to significant consequences", as the malware travelled through the network to endpoints running Windows or macOS, "thus providing wider access for attackers which might go unnoticed".

Prolific Russian-speaking group Turla, for example, has significantly changed its toolset over the years, including the use of Linux backdoors. According to Kaspersky, a new modification of the Penguin x64 Linux backdoor, reported earlier in 2020, has now affected dozens of servers in Europe and the US.

Another example is Lazarus, a Korean-speaking APT group, which continues to diversify its toolset and develop non-Windows malware. Kaspersky recently reported on the multi-platform framework called MATA and in June 2020, researchers analysed new samples linked to the AppleJeus and TangoDaiwbo campaigns, used in financial and espionage attacks. The samples studied included Linux malware.

A number of measures can be taken to mitigate the risks of Linux systems falling victim to attacks, including straightforward steps like ensuring firewalls are set up properly and unused ports are blocked, automating security updates and using a dedicated security solution with Linux protection.

Organisations should additionally maintain a list of trusted software sources and avoid using unencrypted update channels; use key-based SSH authentication and protect keys with passwords; use two-factor authentication and store sensitive keys on external token devices; and avoid running binaries and scripts from untrusted sources.

"We advise cybersecurity experts to take this trend into account and implement additional measures to protect their servers and workstations," Namestnikov said.
